Extractions/Bone Grafting

Ridge Preservation: Extraction + Bone Grafting

Extraction + Bone Grafting IN SARASOTA & SURROUNDING AREAS

PURPOSE

If a tooth has been deemed hopeless and you have been told it requires extraction, preservation of the socket (or hole where the tooth has been removed) with simultaneous bone grafting is crucial. Placing a bone graft within the socket will help to prevent immediate bone shrinkage while keeping the bone contour natural in appearance. If you desire an implant in the future, ridge preservation will provide the stability and support needed for successful long term results.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

  • One to two hours in length with local anesthetic.
  • First, the tooth will be extracted with a cleansing of the socket of all infection.
  • A particulate bone allograft (donor graft that is the consistency of sand particles) will then be packed in the socket and protected with a covering (membrane) to prevent soft tissue from growing into the surgical site. Sutures (stitches) will be used to close the surgical site.
  • A post-operative visit to check on your healing and to remove any remaining sutures will take place approximately two weeks following your surgery date.

RECOVERY TIME

Approximately 1-2 days. Every patient differs on level of discomfort.

STEP 1

Tooth has been planned for extraction.

STEP 2

Tooth has been extracted.

STEP 3

Empty socket from extraction is filled with a cadaver particulate bone graft.

STEP 4

Bone graft is fully protected by a collagen membrane to prevent soft tissue growth into surgical site.

STEP 5

Surgical site is closed with a few stitches. Bone graft needs to heal for 4 months in order to become a dense union with your current bone.

STEP 6

A titanium implant is placed after 4 months, if desired.
