Sinus Augmentations

Osteotome Sinus Elevation

Sinus Augmentations IN SARASOTA BY Dr. Jennifer Fiorica

PURPOSE

It is quite common to have a sinus positioned at a lower level as the tooth is progressively further back in the mouth. The goal of this procedure is to minimally lift the Schneiderian membrane off the sinus cavity floor with the addition of a particulate bone graft in order to successfully place an implant.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

  • One to two hours in length with local anesthetic.
  • First, a small hole is made in the bone with an implant drill. Then, a set of special sinus elevation instruments is used to carefully elevate the sinus membrane with a simultaneous bone graft. The implant may now be placed and will heal for 3-4 months prior to placement of a crown by your general dentist.
  • A post-operative visit to check on your healing and to remove any remaining sutures will take place approximately two weeks following your surgery date.

RECOVERY TIME

Approximately 1-2 days. Every patient differs on level of discomfort.

Lateral Window Sinus Elevation

PURPOSE

If a tooth has been missing for many years, the sinus cavity will drop significantly, requiring a larger sinus elevation through a window of bone in the cheek. A large particulate bone graft will be added. Your dental provider will decide whether an implant may be placed simultaneously or following 6 months healing.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

  • Two hours in length with local anesthetic.
  • A window is created in the cheekbone to carefully lift the Schneiderian membrane off of the sinus floor allowing access for bone grafting. An implant will then be placed either simultaneously or following 6 months healing.
  • A post-operative visit to check on your healing and to remove any remaining sutures will take place approximately two weeks following your surgery date.

RECOVERY TIME

Approximately 2-3 days. Every patient differs on level of discomfort.

Step-by-step Visual Of Window Procedure

STEP 1
A small window is created in the bone and reflected for access into the sinus cavity.

STEP 2

The sinus membrane is carefully reflected off of the bony sinus floor. The addition of bone graft has begun.

STEP 3

Bone graft is added to fill the sinus cavity and will keep the membrane in an elevated position.

STEP 4

The bone will heal for 6 months to become dense.

STEP 5

An implant is placed and will heal for 3 months prior to placement of a crown by your general dentist.
