Periodontal Osseous Surgery

Periodontal Osseous Surgery IN SARASOTA & SURROUNDING AREAS

Purpose

Osseous surgery, also referred to as "pocket reduction," is aimed at gaining access to the tooth roots to eliminate calculus (or tartar) and disease-causing bacteria. The goal of this procedure is to reduce or eliminate deep pockets. Some of the main benefits of this surgery include reducing bacterial spread from the oral cavity throughout the body, halting the progression of bone loss, and opening spaces between your teeth to facilitate greater access for brushing and flossing.

Procedure Details

Time varies between individuals but typically lasts 2 hours in length with the use of a local anesthetic.

Gum tissue height will be reduced to widen spaces and allow access to clean between your teeth. The tissue will be opened to visualize and remove all calculus deposits beneath the gingiva and in some areas, to smooth the bone structure. Every case is unique and may involve a combination of conventional and laser therapy.

Recovery Time

  • Approximately 2 days, depending on extent of surgery.
  • You may experience cold sensitivity that should dissipate over time.
  • Tissue shrinkage will occur. This allows for access to cleanse in between your teeth, where excess tissue was trapping food in areas of bone loss.

Pre-treatment

The calculus has extended below the gums on the root surface which has caused inflammation, pocketing, and bone loss.

During Treatment

The gum tissue is carefully reflected surrounding the tooth and all calculus is removed.

Post-treatment

The underlying bone was smoothed and tissue placed against the level of bone to expose more tooth structure for maintaining periodontal health.
